Helen Driggs is the former Jewelry Group Technical Editor for Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist and an experienced metalsmith. Her popular column “Cool Tools & Hip Tips” and video library: Metalsmith Essentials: Basic Fabrication, Rivets & Cold Connections, Machine Finishing Jewelry, Textures & Patinas and One Hour Rings make her a popular and sought-after instructor on the show circuit. Her book, The Jewelry Maker’s Field Guide was published in 2013. Let’s reinvent the ubiquitous concho into something more urban; fashion forward and environmentally friendly. Explore upcycling and cold-connections as you rethink a classic ornament icon. We will use a wide variety of materials and techniques and do some creative problem solving in this urban approach to a classic motif. Sawing skills are helpful! We’ll cover these techniques: Metalsmithing; Mixed Materials; Cold Connections and Design
Class Duration:
4 Hours
Depending on speed and skill level, you will complete at least one concho and have the materials available in your kit to create a cuff bracelet from recycled leather or a fiber or cord necklace.
Students should bring the following tools:
Flush wire cutters, Jeweler’s saw and 2/0 blades, Ball peen or chasing hammer, Rawhide mallet, Set of hand files, Set of sanding papers, Center punch, Bench pin and steel block, Chain nose, flat nose and roundnose pliers, Sharpie Marker fine, Flex Shaft, stand and chuck key (optional), Desired work light/surface
