Her work has been featured in professional catalogs, magazines and on the covers of national publications. She has a B.A. in Art, an M.A. in Art History as well as a Juris Doctorate. She has been a practicing attorney in the state of California as well as a lifetime state credentialed secondary art teacher. She is heavily involved in teaching others how to create beautiful jewelry as well as continually improving her own craft. Her current emphasis is on creating fused glass specializing in unique and elegant jewelry pieces, many of which are encased in 14K gold fill and/or sterling silver wire. The constant theme of her work has always been attention to detail, good craftsmanship and dramatic, yet elegant, one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Her work can be found at several higher end shows throughout California, Arizona and Nevada. She has been an exhibiting artist at the Laguna Beach Art-A-Fair for the past 17 years and has taught wire work aboard a Celebrity cruise ship to Alaska. Both novice and skilled wire workers will benefit from techniques learned in one of Merilou’s classes.
Class Fee: $145.00 (no refunds after December 15, 2022)Skill Level: Beginner
There are many chain maille weaves but the Byzantine is my favorite beginner’s weave. It’s
simple to make, easy to learn and wonderful to look at. The weave is actually comprised of
smaller units each consisting of 14 jump rings. After you master the basic weave you can change
things up by adding different metals to parts of the weave. There are infinite variations. This
bracelet is worn by both men and women and can be expanded for a necklace/chain. We will be
using fairly small rings so I would suggest some sort of battery operated light and magnification
so you can see well. It is important to close the rings properly.
You will receive all the necessary jump rings, a jeweler’s polishing cloth, a fleece work surface
and a copy of my 12 page instruction book featuring complete instructions with color step by
step photographs, all of which is yours to take home. All tools and materials will be provided
during the workshop so all you need to bring is a willingness to learn! Class is limited to 6 so
register early.
